Lately I’m thinking…

That was a lame national championship game. I wasn’t that excited about it in the first place, but then Colt McCoy went down and I was suddenly upset that the Office and 30 Rock were re-runs. Texas dominated most of the 1st quarter and yet when it was over they were down 7-6, meaning unless Alabama somehow scored -1 points the game was pretty much over. McElroy has to be the worst QB to win a title in recent memory – whenever alabama got tired of running for first downs they’d call a pass play, but he would just sit back there pump faking until he got sacked. He only completed 6 passes the whole game! At least he had less interceptions than the alabama punter though

Lately I’m thinking…

So let me get this straight, the last couple nights of bowl games leading up to tonight’s “BCS championship” consisted of the Fiesta Bowl, then the Sugar Bowl, and then the…GMAC bowl between central michigan and troy?? At least it was a good game I suppose. On a side note, this is the 45th image returned when searching for “bowl game”. I’ll take it

This is really interesting…

Steph just told me that she “lost” a chunk of her hair, like somebody took some scissors and cut off a big piece. She doesn’t know what happened. I asked if she could go out in public and she said “Ya probably for the most part”. Ummmmm

About my list of new years resolutions. I haven’t come up with one yet but definitely plan on it. Hopefully I can get to it this week before it becomes a resolution just to make one. One thing I know is going on there is earlier gadget updates. I also want to go out to less dinners and out to more happy hours. Who’s coming with me

Lately I’m thinking…

I forgot how stressful college bball games were until last night. I used to think espn360 was the greatest thing ever but wasn’t thinking that last night as Kansas was losing to Cornell. make a layup and get a rebound! Anyways, Sherron killed it, obvs

How long until the imposters start just taking celebrities names with “theReal” in front of it? Here’s a picture of Joey holding brittney locked in the closet in the middle of a cupcake fight…at about 9:30 on a Monday night. It took about 4 minutes for the wheels to come off. I’m pretty sure Joe was the only one who had to work next day, and he couldn’t believe I was leaving his house already at 2:00 AM

This is really interesting…

(this is random) My grade school (Highland elementary) mascot was a scottie, nothing threatening or cool like a panther or tiger or something. On top of that, Mitch’s parents had scottie dogs as pets, so I feel like i just grew up in a fantasy world where i thought pretty much everyone in the world was really familiar with scotties, and loved them as much as my “I Love Scotties” pin said I did.  Shoot, maybe random was an understatement

Wow I’ve been away a long time. A FANTASTIC vacation in MT followed by a TERRIFIC new years in Portland. Then it was my birthday and now back to work. Apparently it’s a rough transition back into the “real world” – I set my alarm wrong this morning so we woke up at 8:30 and had to catch the late crowded extra urine wagon only to find it’s pouring outside. Better luck tomorrow I suppose

This is really interesting…

This is what people wear in MT……..I didn’t feel quite as stupid at Joe’s house during the masquerade party, but felt pretty stupid when we went to the bars and nobody else even wore a mask. Well until the Joe-nado showed up, then i didn’t feel stupid at all.

This is really interesting…

So I was trying to pay the gas bill online on Friday (the 1st) but it wouldn’t let me schedule a payment until the 5th. But when I tried to pay on the 5th it said my payment would be a day late, because it was due on the 4th. So I looked into paying by phone and apparently that cost money, so i decided to look for locations to pay in person. It came back with a list of two 7-11 gas stations and a jewelry store. Really? Is this a legit company? Sounds sketchy. Hi I’ll take some pearl ear rings and can i also pay my gas bill. “Did you pay the gas bill?…Do you realize what you’ve done!!”

Lately I’m thinking…

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, I had a GREAT weekend! Tanner is dead on right, I spent most of my birthday hung over. I decided that Sunday is the worst day to have your bday on because that means you go out saturday night. Any other night you either go out the night of your actual bday or the next weekend, saving you from spending your special day in a snuggie on the couch. On a more positive note, I got a video camera for christmas that I used at Kells, click here for a good example of us forgetting there are other people at the bar (we don’t know anyone around us)

Here’s a picture of Seeley taking the cab home from the skee lodge. Apparently it’s a rule that every cab driver in the city is required to take dogs. Seems kind of ridiculous to me, but oh well, that means the party scene for Seeley is probably about to blow up.

Lately I’m thinking…

Sorry for the no update on Friday – the updates are going to be pretty sparse until I get back to Seattle.

This is really interesting…

After two nights of going out in Billings my total combined bar tab was…….$4.00. I’m also averaging 6 slices of village inn per day. You could say this trip is going strong, to quite strong.

Lately I’m thinking…

Paul is ridiculous. So is Levi. I used my badass knife for the 2nd time last week….to cut open our house plant container. Ever since i started flossing regularly there’s tons of space between my teeth and tons of food is getting stuck here. I’m surprised they don’t recommend NOT flossing. I saw a prius the other day with a tow hitch on it, not sure how effective that would be?

The Soapbox:

On the flight in we stopped in helena to drop some people off and pick some people up. Just as we were about to leave (the door was shut, electronics off etc.) the lady announced the toilet was frozen, and if anyone had to use the bathroom they needed to do it there. So 10 people got up and were let back into the helena airport. Ridiculous. Oh, and helena to billings is a 35 minute flight

Joey that’s great news about the Christmas party this year – i’m looking forward to another strong 5th place finish like i had last year in the 40 oz bag decoration competition……NOT, i’m going to frickin knock it out of the park this year. I’m settling for nothing less than gold. Or at least some free Mr. Boston rum

This is really interesting…

So today Steph was vacuuming the upstairs, which for those of you who haven’t seen it is basically like a modern day shag carpet. Only she had the vacuum setting on ‘bare floor’ which is on the opposite end of ‘high carpet’. When i pointed that out she said she liked that better because it cleaned it better. I was dying watching her do it because she could barely push/pull it across the carpet. It looked like she was shoveling gravel or really wet snow or something

Lately I’m thinking…

Okay so this might sound kind of stupid, but i’m BLOWN AWAY on how kids learn to talk. I mean think about it, you’re 1 and can’t say a word, then you’re 2 or something and you’re talking to people! Like asking and answering questions! Answering! And generally with the correct words! It’s not like some kid says “bike I couch pookie mom” when they’re really trying to say “can I have a glass of milk”. (sorry for all the exclamations, but it’s crazy)

Hey there – I just realized today is Wednesday, and not Thursday. Rats. I think it was Joe’s 10 status that might have got me off on the wrong foot

Shout out to…

Everyone who sent us a Christmas card. Getting the mail is usually pretty boring, but yesterday we had 7 cards in the mail! Mitch, that’s a great picture of snowflake. Skeelodge and Molly, Seeley thanks you for including her name. IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS

Holzer, I saw “The U” 30 for 30 show last night. It mostly consisted of them all saying “the reason why we were so cocky is because we were better than everyone else, and we were”, which basically just translates into “we’re still just super cocky”. My favorite part is when they all insisted they would have even more championships if they would have just won a couple more games. Anyways, there were seriously no rules, a miami guy would tackle somebody, start slapping him, push him back down, then run into the stands and eat some popcorn and it didn’t appear anything would happen.

This is really interesting…

I was waiting to cross the street today and a man came up to me and asked if I had a lighter. I replied with a no, even though unlike numerous people around the block i was blatantly not smoking. He then asked for a dollar, to which I said “no, sorry”. He then replied “Well there’s an ATM right in there”. whoa whoa whoa buddy, so since i don’t have a lighter you want me to go to the 20 dollar bill dispensing machine and get you some money? The only small increments those things deal with are the 2.00 ATM fees they hand out. I mean, i would have had to charge that guy money to use one, and judging by the way the conversation was going that wasn’t an option.

I was at Walgreens the other day and saw that they are selling snuggies for DOGS! Isn’t that completely ridiculous? I mean honestly, it’s a dog, if you’re one of those people that wants to put a snuggie on them, just put the one you already own on them, obviously….

I tried coming up with a list of my top 10 favorite bars – click here to see it. I wanted to add a little bit more to it as well as some more pictures (especially at bleachers) but it was just taking too long. Also, if you’re confused why on earth I need a “blog” category on my blog, click the “welcome” link at the top of the blog for a little background

Lately I’m thinking…

Holzer, let’s discuss the locker situation some more over a delicious wheat beer from the brew pub – see the soapbox for some of my thoughts though (here’s an article link as well)

Lately I’m thinking…

“Is this tootbrush approved by the american dental association?”

The Soapbox:

Locker was predicted by mcshay as the #1 overall pick, but that was far from a guarantee. I think it’s safe to say he would have been in the top 10 though. And although the labor agreement is expiring, there really is no guarantee that the wages are going to drop that much for rookies. Sarkisian said agents/draft guys told both carson palmer and matt leinert to come out early because pay would change for the worse the next year. Also, for QBs the big paycheck is the 2nd one, not the first, and the percentages of qbs coming out their junior year are much worse than seniors (and i feel especially with locker who everyone agrees isn’t polished yet). He’s also turned down two big baseball contracts before, so money doesn’t seem to be the issue. There’s obviously arguments both for leaving and staying, but I think it came down to him just wanting to play college football one more year, especially after they seemed to figure out how to best use him the last two games, and i’m excited!

Blade’s Top 10 Bars

I tried to come up with a list based on a quasi rubric, so that’s how the results are ordered.  If I were to order them from the top of my head for instance, I probably would have put a bar like the penguin higher.  If you agree or (more likely) disagree with any of the scores or rankings, leave a comment, you just might sway my opinion & the score.   The scores are displayed at the bottom along with a quick description of the categories – and now on to the countdown!

Just Missed the Cut:

  • St Andrews (Seattle, WA) – super stiff drinks, pretty cheap and the bartender knows us (although I can’ decide if that’s a good thing or not in this case).  Took some hits on scores because there’s really nobody there besides who you went with and isn’t anything special inside.  The reason it’s a good choice sometimes is because of the location, drinks, and plenty of space.  Everytime I think of this place though I think of being extremely hung over the next day.
  • The Legion (Bozeman, MT)- our most regular college bar, it definitely got bonus points considering one of our friends was the “DJ” there which meant you could do whatever you wanted on the dance floor and most importantly that you had somewhere to sit down for minute.  Unfortuntely it took some hits on scores due to the fact there was a fight every night and it was a basement bar that just held in loads and loads of cigarette smoke.  Oh ya and it blew up.
  • Norms (Seattle, WA) – Great food, they allow dogs, they sell PBR 40s, giant windows that open up in the summer and I actually like going out there at night, at least as a first stop.  Hmm maybe this should have been a lot higher

10.  Triangle- Seattle, WA (45)

Pretty standard option for going out in Fremont that scored pretty much average scores across the board.  No matter how warm or cold it is we always seem to end up sitting outside.   I probably should have docked it even more points under ‘intangibles’ simply because the new name is “nine million in unmarked bills”…..ouch

T-9.  The Pengiun – Portland, OR (46)

I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad time at the penguin, any time that’s our destination things are going well for me.  It was one of only three bars to score a 10 on intangibles which can mostly be attributed to the karaoke, how close it is to Holzer’s house, and some of my best times are from Portland have been there.  It scored relatively low on rules and bartenders which hurt it’s ranking.  “Mad Dog” scared me, Steph got cut off last time before we all pretty much got asked to leave when she casually closed out all of our tabs and gave it to us to sign, and the time I fell in the thorn bush they wouldn’t let me in because my arms were bleeding.  That being said, I still feel like this bar is too low, but don’t know any areas where I think it deserves a higher grade.

T-9.  Boodles – Bozeman, MT (46)

The price for a Montana bar hurt it, but the atmosphere helped make up for it.  This was a great Bozeman bar and always a great change of pace from the R-Bar and Legion.  In fact, it was physically right in between the two, whoa!  It’s really unfortunate it blew up, when they open a new one I’m definitely making someone drive me down there from Tanner’s house.

7.  Brew Pub – Billings, MT (47)

It’s probably not even the most popular bar in the building, but it’s always served as a meeting place for everyone I want to go out with when I’m back home.  The Friday night before Christmas is always one of my favorite nights.   It scored pretty average scores across the board with high marks for the crowd and a bump in intangibles since it has one of my two favorite beers, the ‘whitetail wheat’.  See you there soon!

6.  Spectators – Bozeman, MT (48)

Specs!  Our college sports bar right next to campus – let’s just run through some highlights:  They serve pizza AND chicken strips, they cover the entire ground with saud for the Cat-griz game, and they have a friendly all female staff.  I’ve walked the drinks from there right to Joe’s, so i’ve never even thought about the possibility they might have rules there.  The only low mark it had was for crowd because unlike the wait staff, everyone else there is a guy, most likely with a beard wearing carharts.

5.  Lenys – Seattle, WA (49)

Our kickball bar where we celebrated back to back championships and a bunch of victories.  The one bartender they have there (Elliot) kind of tries to regulate some rules, but that hasn’t stopped us from having foot races outside and pretty much doing whatever we want inside.  The crowd is pretty much all kickball players and their friends and it’s pretty fun trying to make friends with people who you didn’t like 10 minutes before because they were on the other team.  In addition to darts and pool they also have big buck hunter which is obviously good for a few bonus points.

4.  Bleachers – Seattle, WA (50)

Our Thursday night bar we went to every week before we got really old and also the scene of one of the greatest “Sunday Fundays” of all time.  They have lots of games, a jukebox, chicken strips and the bartender & owner knew us and called us “the new generation”.  It is literally impossible to get in trouble there.  Just thinking about that place makes me want to go there right now.  On a side note, I blame ‘bleacher bombs’ for anything that ever goes wrong.

3.  Kells – Seattle, WA (51)

Ah my favorite bar in Seattle, every time I go there i’m convinced it’s the best night of my life.  Half of the bar has a live irish band and the other side jams some hits across the speakers.  They also have a bonus corner bar as well as the upstairs for private parties.  I’m pretty sure I’ve had 3 tabs open at the same time there, because it’s just easier than always going back to the same spot.  I’ve got in trouble there a few times, but never kicked out, which is nice.   It scored high marks all across the board but took a big hit on price – there’s been some unneccesarily expensive nights there.

2.  Fillings Station – Seeley Lake, MT (55)

Hmm where to start – let’s just go through the categories really quick.  It’s probably cheaper for me to drive to seeley lake and go out than it is to go to kells.  I’ve found receipts in my pockets the next day in the single digit range.  It’s pretty fun mingling with the laid back country folks, only not all of them are laid back so you have to be kind of careful.  You can ride your bike in the bar, throw popcorn at each other, try to lock bartenders out of the place…you name it.  They also have karaoke, you just have to watch out for the guy running it turning off your mic.

1.  Old Granary – Billings, MT (56)

I’m specifically talking about the granary deck.  I probably should have docked it some points somehow considering they tore it down and it no longer exists (at least not the version i’m rating), but it was the perfect storm of fun at the time.  We knew the bartenders and waitresses (which also meant you got a giant discount), it seemed like we knew everyone there, we could go when we were slightly underage and it was always nice being able to sit outside.  There were those couple nights a summer where the place would just absolutely blow up – i’m surprised the deck never collapsed actually.  As a bonus it was a nice walking distance home too

Categories:

  • Price – relevant to the city it’s in, so for example even though Boodles isn’t that expensive compared to Seattle bars, it’s pretty expensive compared to Montana bars.
  • Atmosphere – pretty self explanatory.  hopefully.
  • Crowd – The mix of people not including the people you came with.  Going to bleachers with all your friends is obviously really fun, but the other people there are sometimes kind of ‘sketchy’.
  • Rules – Do you get in trouble for just having a little ‘extra’ fun?
  • Bartenders – Basically how friendly they are.  If they know you it’s a bonus
  • Intangibles – everything the other categories don’t cover, including things like karaoke, buck hunter etc.

Scores:

Bar Price Atmosphere Crowd Rules Bartenders Intangibles Total
Old Granary 9 10 9 10 9 9 56
Filling Station 10 8 7 10 10 10 55
Kells 6 10 9 8 8 10 51
Bleachers 8 8 6 10 9 9 50
Lenys 8 8 8 9 8 8 49
Spectators 7 8 6 9 10 8 48
Brew Pub 7 8 9 8 8 7 47
Boodles 6 9 7 8 8 8 46
The Penguin 8 8 6 7 7 10 46
Triangle 7 8 8 8 7 7 45
Norms 7 8 6 8 7 8 44
Legion 9 5 7 8 6 9 44
St Andrews 8 7 5 9 8 6 43

7.  Spectators – Bozeman, MT (48)
